A Little Goes a Long Way

The latest minimally invasive procedures that deliver big results

It seems that we are hearing a lot about a "little" surgery -- mini-this, short-scar that, etc. Sure, less invasive techniques sound appealing, but what are we really talking about, and do these procedures actually work?

Minimally invasive surgery is a catch-all phrase that describes surgery done using techniques that require shorter incisions, less aggressive surgery, and result in shorter recovery times than more traditional methods. Some of these procedures are truly revolutionary. Gall bladder removal, for example, used to require an eight inch incision under the rib cage, and was a very painful procedure with weeks of recovery. With laparoscopic techniques, on the other hand, surgeons today can perform the procedure with four small incisions totaling three inches, and a recovery period measured in days instead of weeks.

Cosmetic procedures have also been revolutionized over the past several years, yet many of the procedures that doctors refer to as "mini" are less revolution and more evolution. As cosmetic surgeons, we have come to appreciate that some surgeries can be done equally well with shorter scars, less surgery, and a markedly reduced recovery time. Translation: you are looking and feeling fresh faced and fabulous without major interruptions to your life or risks to your health.

Short-scar breast lifts and reductions, for example, can give results that surpass more traditional techniques in shape and longevity, with significantly less scar burden. Mini- or short-scar facelifts offer similar benefits.

Yet if these techniques offer similar results with less surgery, why are the traditional alternatives still around? There are several reasons:

  • "Mini" procedures aren't ideal for all patients. An ideal candidate for a short-scar facelift is often younger, and has better facial structure than someone who needs a more aggressive procedure. Similarly, short-scar breast reductions may not adequately treat a patient with a 42F bra size. Massive weight loss patients often need large-scale excisions of excess tissue. In all of these cases, a smaller procedure may under-treat the patient's concerns, wasting both time and money.
  • These procedures may be more challenging to perform, and can require more experience. It is often easier to perform a body contouring procedure with large incisions than smaller ones. As such it is critical to look for a board certified doctor who is trained in minimally invasive surgeries.
  • Surgeons vary. Each of us has our own particular preferences, based on training and our surgical experience. Our techniques evolve over time, and if something works, we are likely to try it again.

Our goal as surgeons should be to perform the smallest operation that will correct the patient's concerns. In some cases, that operation is a minimally invasive procedure. In other cases, however, a more aggressive procedure is required for an optimal result. That's why it's important for us to be versed in all types of cosmetic surgery, from minimally- to maximally invasive.

What everyone should know about laser hair removal

Shaving, tweezing, wonder creams and waxing. They all do the job, but at the end of the day, most of us are left with discomfort in the way of nicks, cuts, rashes and bumps that keep coming back. This year, put an end to unwanted hair - for good.

Laser hair removal has come a long way since it first hit the market, and at The Center For Cosmetic Surgery, we offer the most advanced options for quick treatments with lasting results. And while the snow on the ground suggests otherwise, if you want to be stubble free come summer, now is the time to begin the process.

Always of the forefront of beauty, we use the eMax Laser Hair Removal System from Syneron™. Designed specifically for hair removal, the eMax system uses elos technology for safe, effective, and comfortable treatment of unwanted hair. The elos technology contained in the eMax system harnesses the power of both radio-frequency and light energy to precisely target hair follicles. This means that you are likely to experience better results in fewer sessions. What's more, the system used at both Rejuvenate! and The Center for Cosmetic Surgery can effectively remove even very light-colored hairs and works well with all skin tones, including tanned skin. Both are rare capabilities for laser hair removal.

But what can you expect with even the most advanced laser hair removal treatments? And is it worth both the time and expense involved? While results can vary, most who choose to engage in the process are overwhelmingly happy with their decision.

Laser hair removal treats hundreds of hairs at a time, meaning it works well for both small and large treatment areas, including the back, shoulders, legs, arms, and face. Treatment time depends mostly on the size of the targeted area, with smaller regions such as the underarms taking about 20 minutes while areas such as the back and chest take quite a bit more.

Because hair grows in cycles, some hair follicles will be in a "dormant phase" during your initial laser treatment. Therefore, several laser hair removal treatments are necessary in order to affect all follicles during their active stage. Most patients need three to five treatments, depending upon hair density, thickness, and color, to achieve their best results. Treatments are spaced about a month apart, making March the perfect time to begin in order to be silky smooth by summertime. After this, you may need an additional treatment or two each year to maintain the results.
