Nipple & Areola Reduction

A woman’s nipples are important to her body image, sexuality, and ability to breastfeed. Having nipples that are prominent can make women feel self conscious both in and out of clothing. Enlarged or misshapen areolas, which are often the result of breastfeeding, weight changes, and the natural aging process, can look out of proportion with the breasts and cause self consciousness as well. The exceptional  plastic surgeons at The Center for Cosmetic Surgery offer nipple and areola reduction surgery to help women from the Denver metro area, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins feel more confident and beautiful.

What are the nipple and areola?

The nipple is the projecting portion of the breast that carries the lactiferous (milk) ducts. The areola is the dark pigmented circle of skin from which the nipple projects.

Is there anything I can do about nipples that are too long or wide? How about enlarged areola?

Yes. Under a local anesthetic, simple procedures are available to reduce the length and/or width of your nipple depending upon your goals. Inverted nipples can be corrected with surgery as well. Similarly, enlarged areolas can be made smaller with minimal recovery time and very little risk. Many women have their nipples corrected during a breast enhancement procedure such as breast lift, breast enlargement, or breast reduction. Men can have nipple and areola correction performed as part of male breast reduction.

Will I have visible scars after nipple or areola reduction surgery?

Our surgeons take care to place the incisions where the resulting scars will be barely noticeable. For nipple reduction surgery, the incision is placed at the base of the nipple where it meets the areola. For areola reshaping and reduction surgery, the incision is placed along the edge of the areola. When combined with breast enhancement, areola surgery is performed through the same incision.

How long does it take to recover from nipple or areola reduction surgery?

When performed without breast enhancement, nipple and areola surgery typically require just a day or 2 of downtime. The nipples and areolas will take about 3 to 4 weeks to heal enough for you to resume strenuous activities. Recovery time when performed with breast enhancement will depend on the procedure and technique performed.

FAQ

Will I lose sensation in my nipples after surgery?

Loss of sensation after nipple/areola surgery is possible, but usually temporary.

How long does nipple or areola reduction surgery take?

When performed alone, these procedures take about an hour to complete.

Can I still breastfeed after an areola or nipple reduction?

It is possible that surgery of the nipple or areola can impact breastfeeding. During your consultation, let your surgeon know if you hope to breastfeed in the future. Because breastfeeding often stretches the nipples and areolas, it may be best to have corrective surgery when you are finished having children.
