WHAT DOES ABPS CERTIFICATION MEAN?
Certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) indicates that the surgeon has completed a 4-year medical degree, a surgical internship, and a residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery and has passed comprehensive written and oral exams.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A COSMETIC SURGEON AND A PLASTIC SURGEON?
A plastic surgeon is specifically trained in plastic surgery, while a cosmetic surgeon may have varying levels of training. Furthermore, any medical professional can call themselves a cosmetic surgeon, even if their background is in another field of medicine.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHECK A SURGEON'S CERTIFICATION STATUS?
Understanding whether a plastic surgeon is board eligible or board certified (and maintaining that certification) will help you choose a surgeon with extensive training and demonstrated excellence in their discipline.
Although other medical boards for cosmetic or dermatologic surgery exist, look for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The ABPS is the only plastic surgery board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

With so many top plastic surgeons in the Denver area, how do you narrow down your choices?
DON'T LIMIT YOUR SEARCH TO WHERE YOU LIVE. The best plastic surgeon for you may not be just down the street or even in the next town over. Patients from Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, and throughout Colorado and the U.S. travel to our practice because getting the best care is worth it.
SEEK A SURGEON WHO UPHOLDS THE PROPER CREDENTIALS. Look for certification or eligibility for certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) and membership in prestigious societies such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and The Aesthetic Society.
READ REAL PATIENT REVIEWS. Get to know the patient experience straight from the source. While no surgeon can guarantee your results, understanding how patients feel about their outcomes and experiences can influence your decision.
VIEW BEFORE-AND-AFTER PHOTOS. There are two important reasons to look at before-and-after pictures when considering plastic surgery. The first is to determine whether your desired procedure will actually address your concerns. The second is to distinguish which surgeon produces the type of results that align with your goals.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE SURGICAL FACILITY. Look for accreditation from the AAAHC or another professional body. Other amenities, such as state-of-the-art technology and highly trained surgical staff, can give you peace of mind that you’re in the right hands.
SCHEDULE YOUR CONSULTATION. Cosmetic surgery is a deeply personal experience. By meeting with a plastic surgeon for a consultation, you are gauging your levels of trust and comfort with them and determining whether they are the best fit for you.
