Treating Hyperpigmented or Sun-Damanged Skin

The Center for Cosmetic Surgery

Hyperpigmented or Sun-Damanged SkinIf fine lines and blotchy color greet you as you look in the mirror each morning, don’t be too hard on yourself. These are the hallmarks of sun damaged skin that almost everyone eventually suffers. No matter how hard you work to protect yourself from the sparkling weather of our Front Range communities, you’re just not going to be able to avoid sun damage completely. Bright sun shines everywhere you go; not just on the ski slopes of Vail and Copper Mountain, but on the sidelines at your kids’ soccer games as well.

Sun is so hard on the skin because its ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate deeply. UV rays damage the top layers, causing fine wrinkles and dry, dull looking skin, and the layers underneath which support the skin to lie firm and smooth.

Hyperpigmentation is a condition in which melanin, the substance that gives skin its natural color, increases in certain spots or patches. “Age spots,” which can pepper the face, hands, arms and chest, are caused by sun damage. Other instances of hyperpigmentation can be brought on by scars, diseases, hormonal changes, and certain medications.

We’re experts at treating sun-damaged and hyperpigmented skin at Rejuvenate! After all, we’re Coloradans too and we experience firsthand the effects of our great weather on our faces, hands, chests, and other exposed areas. From helping you be more effective in protecting your skin to reversing the damage that’s already there, we look forward to working with you.

Caring for Sun-Damaged and Hyperpigmented Skin

Our treatment plan for sun-damaged and hyperpigmented skin includes the following steps:

  • The first move in treating hyperpigmented and sun damaged skin is to prevent further damage from occurring. While using a drugstore product is certainly better than doing nothing, physician-strength sun protection products offer so much more than simple sunscreens. Our SkinCeuticals line combines powerful UV blocking ingredients with super-antioxidants for photo protection and good skin health. Obagi Professional C-Serums consist of professional strength vitamin C formulas. They penetrate deeply into the skin, yielding maximum sun protection and antioxidant benefit.
  • To lighten selected areas of hyperpigmented skin, our pharmacist will provide hydroquinone. By decreasing the formation of melanin, this organic compound is safe and effective in reducing dark patches without skin irritation. It can be used on age spots caused by sun damage as well as hyperpigmented skin resulting from other causes.
  • Photorejuvenation or a “photofacial” with Intense Pulse Light (IPL) is next on the menu. This treatment reduces the appearance of fine lines, dull surface skin and age spots in brief, non-invasive treatments. Short pulses of bright light are applied to your skin, causing a slight stinging sensation. You’ll be able to return to your day immediately, and see excellent long-term improvement in your skin. Most clients need a few treatments for maximum benefit.
  • We can promote exfoliation and restore your skin’s healthy, fresh surface with a chemical peel. We have three formulas to choose from offering different degrees of exfoliation. Each one penetrates into the skin to remove top layers of dead, dull cells. Fine wrinkles and uneven skin tone fade, and the treatment has a beneficial effect on blemishes and scars as well.

Another option for treating fine lines and wrinkles on the face is laser skin resurfacing. This treatment uses a unique laser wavelength to treat both the outermost and deeper layers of the skin in just one or two treatment sessions.
