Is Getting a Mommy Makeover Selfish?

Exercise and eating a healthy diet can help you lose “baby weight” after having children, but they aren’t always enough to regain your pre-mom body. Diastasis, extra skin, stretch marks, and enlarged nipples and sagging breasts are real, and it’s virtually impossible to reverse those post-pregnancy changes on your own completely.

That can be frustrating, and it certainly doesn’t help that some people suggest women who choose plastic surgery procedures such as a Mommy Makeover are taking a shortcut. At our Denver practice, we often see women who work out and devote themselves to their families but who want to regain confidence in their bodies.

In this blog post, we’ll explain why being confident in your body can ultimately improve your mood and help you be a more self-assured parent.

A Mommy Makeover Isn’t a Shortcut

Many moms who are considering Mommy Makeover body contouring procedures such as cosmetic breast surgery and tummy tuck in the Denver area worry that they’re putting their needs above those of their families. That seems to be a universal concern. One 35-year-old woman on the RealSelf website asked if she was “selfish and lazy” for even thinking about getting a Mommy Makeover. The answer is NO!

The fact is that having children results in changes to the body that no amount of working out or following strict diets can address. Loose abdominal skin doesn’t tighten on its own. Separated abdominal muscles can’t repair themselves, and deflated breasts won’t magically regain their volume or shape.

Confidence and Being a Parent

Pretty much everyone has heard the phrase, “when you look good, you feel good.” Like most clichés, it’s generally true. Great parents, of course, come in all sizes, but how a mom feels about herself is influenced by her body image and self-esteem. A mother who feels confident about her body is typically happier overall, and that self-assurance can benefit the relationships she has with her children.

Can You Benefit From a Mommy Makeover?

There are multiple issues to consider before scheduling a consultation with a plastic surgeon to discuss Mommy Makeover surgery. Moms, especially those with young children, need a reliable support system that can help with household chores, running errands, and child care. You should also think about the cost of the procedure and if the surgery will put stress on your family’s finances. Whether you’re planning to have additional children also needs to be considered before deciding to get a Mommy Makeover.

What shouldn’t influence your choice is worrying about putting your needs ahead of a partner or children or feeling like you should be happy with your body even if you’re self-conscious.

It’s important to have realistic expectations before getting plastic surgery and to understand your motivations. But if you want to feel comfortable in a bikini or if you’re tired of relying on Spanx® to keep everything together, there’s certainly no shame in seeking medical help.

It is essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon with the experience and expertise to produce excellent results, such as those you can see in our gallery of patient before-and-after photos. These photos demonstrate how transformative a Mommy Makeover can be.
