During your initial recovery from breast augmentation performed at our Denver, Colorado, cosmetic surgery center, you will be able to enjoy your results soon after awakening from the anesthesia. Although the first few days may be slightly uncomfortable, most women find that the immediately appreciable improvement in their breasts makes the recovery easier. You’ll be able to fill out your blouses, tank tops, dresses, and bikini tops right away. In this blog post, we answer some of our patients’ common questions about breast augmentation and the recovery process.
How painful is breast augmentation recovery?
You will need someone to drive you home and take care of you for the first day or two. You may be groggy or experience some nausea immediately following your procedure. This can usually be managed with anti-nausea medication. You may experience some mild swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Post-surgical pain can be managed with oral medication and rest. Our staff and doctors will be available to you for any help, concerns, or medical needs you may have after your procedure. Your health and comfort are of the utmost importance after your breast enlargement surgery.
How soon can I move around after breast augmentation?
Most women who visit us from areas like Boulder and Colorado Springs for breast augmentation are back on their feet the same day of surgery and conducting normal daily activities within 48 to 72 hours. Your recovery period will be longer if you combine breast augmentation with another procedure like a tummy tuck.
Are there side effects with breast augmentation?
Rarely, reduced nipple sensation can occur. Although there is some soreness associated with submuscular implant placement, the long-term advantages far outweigh this short-term drawback. Implant placement under the pectoral muscle can reduce the potential for capsular contracture (a hardening of scar tissue around the implant), create a more natural-looking breast shape, and reduce implant interference with mammography. Implant placement is a topic you and your surgeon will discuss before your surgery, and you can read more about your implant placement options in a related blog post.
How can I make my breast implants heal faster?
After any breast enhancement procedure, it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions. You will need to reduce your physical activities and refrain from strenuous workouts for at least 3 to 5 weeks. It is crucial that you give yourself the time to heal well immediately following your breast augmentation to optimize your surgical experience and fulfill your overall goal.
As your body heals, you will have special tape covering the incisions and a surgical bra to support your breasts. The tape will be removed after one week, and bra support will be recommended for a variable duration depending upon your individual needs. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons provides additional information about breast augmentation recovery.
Bathing and skin care will require a bit of extra attention after your surgery. You may shower two days after surgery, but it is not advisable to submerge your breasts under water in a bath, pool, or hot tub until specifically determined by your doctor. There will be certain bathing activities (such as reaching over your head to wash your hair) that you will want to avoid for the first few days after surgery.
Depending on your skin tone and your body’s healing process, your scars will be pink for up to 12 months after breast augmentation. Most patients find that their scars become inconspicuous within the first year after their breast enhancement procedure. If you sunbathe or use tanning equipment, it is important to avoid exposing the scars to direct ultraviolet light during this period of time.
